BUDGET TRAVEL
April 2003
The little wonder restaurants of Montréal & Québec
by Pauline Frommer

Stash’s Restauracja Polska… Things are different north of the border. Thanksgiving is celebrated in October, "curling" is as likely to be a sport as a hairdo, and Polish restaurants aren’t the fluorescent diners we get in the United States, famous for slinging leaden latkes. Here at Stash’s, at least, the eastern European cuisine is treated with respect, and the setting’s as classy as they come.

The large room takes its cue from the area – Old Montréal – so the ceiling shows its exposed wooden beams, and the walls are of ancient stone. Hanging from the ceiling are a number of fanciful posters for music and theatre events as well as lampshades in colors taken from a gypsy caravan. Almost as colourful is the food, from hot-pink borscht to pillow-soft pierogi (boiled meat or potato dumplings).

One of my personal favorites is bigos, a hunter’s stew of cabbage, mushrooms, and meat that is tangy and light. Or try the crisp, thin, remarkably grease-free placki (potato pancakes). You’ll leave happy, without the stomach-clumping distress that can follow a Polish feast back in the ole USA. Oh, Canada!

On chilly nights many Montréalers turn to Café Stash in Vieux-Montréal for sustenance – for pork chops or duck, hot borscht, pierogi, or cabbage and sausage – in short, for all the hearty specialties of a Polish kitchen. Diners sit on pews from an old chapel at refectory tables from an old convent.

An intimate dining experience beckons lovers of eastern-European cuisine to the warmth of Stash Cafe.

A nostalgic feeling

An intimate dining experience beckons lovers of eastern-European cuisine to the warmth of Stash Cafe. Located in Old Montreal, this little bistro-type restaurant serves up delicious Polish fare with an atmosphere unlike any other. Warm burgundy colours and low-lit hanging lights create an aura of years past. The melodic sound of live piano waifs through the air making you feel like you are in a pre-war cafe in Warsaw.

Traditional menu

The first thing you will notice is a caution on the menu advising that nothing accompanies Polish cuisine better than some "wodka" (vodka). This in itself epitomizes the charm of this little resto. The menu, written in Polish with an English translation, offers up some of the most popular Polish delights including pierogies, cabbage rolls, bigos and borsch. The food itself is marvelous, tasty and authentic. Everything is prepared with great care and the service is efficient and polite. There is a sense of a family business at this restaurant. Almost like you are visiting family friends.

For the amateurs
Stash Cafe has a solid reputation amongst regulars for tasty Polish food. But, for the more inexperienced, the menu offers a table d'hote that introduces patrons to traditional cooking. Called 'le debutant', it offers clients the opportunity to taste a little bit of everything.

A great place to stop for lunch while exploring Vieux (old) Montreal, this diminutive restauracja polska serves up ample portions of wonderful food at low, LOW prices. Here you find traditional pierogi (stuffed with either meat or cheese), placki (potato pancakes) and nalesniki (Polish pancakes filled with cheese, browned and dressed in sweet cream with cinnamon). But be sure to try the sausage salad. One or two Polish sausages are served up with mixed greens adorned with a tasty honey/mustard vinaigrette and an absolutely addictive dill potato salad. Stash's decor is as rustic and attractive as the food. There are brick and stone walls, exposed beans, colorful hanging lamps and several refractory tables and pews from an old convent. A real find!
